Project Description

We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate to work on a novel type of silicon photonic structure based on large lattices of coupled ring resonators. Arrays of coupled ring resonators are positioned in between the field of optical filter circuits and the field of photonic crystals. As in optical filters, the transmission of ring lattices can be seen as the interference of many delay lines organized in a complex feedback mesh. But as in photonic crystals, these structures inherit properties like photonic bands and band gaps. Compared to classical optical filters, or filters consisting of only a few ring resonators, ring lattices have many more degrees of freedom, especially if individual rings can be tuned. Compared to photonic crystals, ring lattices can be engineered in more detail, as control over the individual coupling constants is possible, and nanometer-scale feature control is not as critical.

In this project, the fundamental properties of such ring resonator lattices will be studied, coming from the field of optical filters and of photonic crystals. Also, the similarities with electron orbitals of molecules or nanocrystals will be explored. Ring resonator lattices can be useful for many applications: sensing, spectroscopic measurement structures, but also signal processing. Especially when the rings are combines with active tuning circuits and monitoring, and even with high-speed modulation, they can open up completely new applications. These devices will be fabricated using IMEC’s silicon photonics platform and characterized in the measurement labs at Ghent university.

We are looking with a PhD candidate with a background in photonics, applied physics or electrical engineering. You should have a strong interest in fundamental physics, and some background in solid-state physics, molecular physics and quantum mechanics will be very valuable, given the similarities of ring resonator lattices and electronic orbitals. Basic programming skills (python) will be very useful, and an open mind and a multi-disciplinary attitude is a must.

Project Description

As a PhD researcher, you will work within the framework of the H2020 OMT Project on “Optomechanics Technologies”. OMT is a large scale European Training Network sponsored by the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions in which academic and industrial partners provide research training on the physics and implementation of Optomechanics Technologies. The ETN research focuses on new technologies based on cavity optomechanical interactions that allow to read out and control mechanical oscillators at the quantum level using optical fields. Your task in this project will be to investigate the interaction of novel 2D-materials such as graphene, MoS2 and others with integrated photonic devices.

Electromechanical actuation of graphene and TMD (transition metal dichalcogenides) membranes have already been investigated for some time. We will integrate membranes of 2D-materials with photonic waveguides and cavities and study the optomechanical coupling between the optical field and 2Dmembranes, which are promising because of their low mass, high force sensitivity, large zero-point motion and high- nonlinearity. You will thereby rely on the vast experience of the Photonics Research Group in the conception, design, fabrication and characterization of novel integrated photonic devices. Coupling to a 2D membrane from an integrated photonic device will allow to increase the optomechanical coupling strength, reduce the dimensions of the membrane and address novel effects (e.g. lifting of thin membranes has been proposed). You will work closely with other partners in the network and the ETN OMT network will offer the opportunity for a long-term research stay in a partner laboratory, including regular training activities organized by the network (see website).

Project Description

You will develop an optical switching layer for guiding femtosecond laser pulses to an optical memory layer. The core elements to be developed will be a low power switch with sufficient bandwidth for switching sub-picosecond pulses and nanophotonic elements for coupling light out of the guiding layer with subwavelength localization.

The candidate will work both with the group of Prof. Van Thourhout at Ghent University and the group of dr. Van Campenhout at imec-Leuven. The work will involve design and advanced characterization. Part of the fabrication will be carried out in imec’s pilot lines, part will be carried out by the candidate in the cleanroom labs of UGent and imec. The candidate will be responsible for the interaction between both groups and for the communication with the project partners. Therefore it is essential the candidate has good communication and interpersonal skills. The position will be carried out in the H2020 SPICE project.



  • The candidate should have a PhD in the fields of nanophotonics or plasmonics
  • The candidate should have experience with advanced photonics simulations tools (FDTD, FEM, …)
  • Preferably the candidate has experience in nanofabriation and characterisation of photonic devices

Contract hours: full-time 40 hrs. p/w

Function description, inclusive responsibilities:
You will be responsible for all the Epitaxy work in engineering and production for Photonic devices.
You will report to the manager Engineering


  • Development of processes and procedures for the production of wafers.
  • Processing using the MOVPE reactor, including setting up and controlling epitaxy recipes.
  • The chemical etching and handling of InP wafers.
  • Characterisation of InP wafers using e.g. XRD and PL. including analysis and reporting.
  • Responsible for the reliable and reproducible processes, including statistical process control (SPC) and continuous improvement
  • Responsible for the uptime of the epitaxial reactors, including planned maintenance and assisting in repair of the tool.

Requirements for the function:


  • BSc or MSc degree in Physics, Chemical Technology or similar
  • 5-10 years working experience with MOVPE processes with III-V semiconductors
  • Working experience in a production environment
  • Experience with process improvement
  • Hands-on mentality and pragmatic attitude
  • Accurate and precise working attitude
  • Can work under pressure
  • Team player
  • Good command of Dutch and English, verbally as well as in writing

As Electronic Hardware Engineer you are responsible for the entire electronic development cycle within a project, including (embedded) software.


  • Design electronic circuits for both Photonic IC based- products as well as production support and test systems
  • Selection of electronic components
  • Create PCB layouts
  • Functional testing of electronic circuits
  • Write the firmware for microcontroller based circuits
  • Write PC based (Windows) software to control microcontroller based circuits
  • Planning of lead time

Professional requirements:
